  • Flux Inteligent, Flux and Agile - Which is cheaper?

OK, the sun is starting to shine a little longer now. Its April tomorrow, and now is the time to consider changing tariff if you have the equipment to support it, for example a solar array and batteries.

OK I have been experimenting to see what the difference are. Of course it's not exact as using the different tariffs would change the way I use my electric. But assume I charged my car or electric motorcycle during the early hours on Flux, as the table below shows, and barely use any electric during the day. The Flux Intelligent doesn't have a cheap overnight period, so i just added the inputs together (household use and Battery charge) as they are same price (25p before the April reduction).

Heat pump will not run most days as it only set at 16C. Already it barely in use as the temperature is much milder now, and temperature will only get hotter for the duration of the flux tariff (until Oct perhaps?)

See this image...

The kWh in the excel file are my actual true readings for Saturday. I have changed most usage for the Flux tariff to during the night in the flux table, as I would charge the car and battery during the early hours for this tariff when its cheaper (16.8p).

Saturday was a sunny day so got a lot of export that day.

Both Flux tariffs, for the last week have all been more profitable if I export 6KW from the battery during the peak period, every time which should be about achievable using my single 8KW battery. (28.22p for Flux - 33.62p or Flux Intelligent) I am having a new battery added to the system on Wednesday so in three hours export, that should increase to about 9KW - which in turn should increase the profit. (assuming thy are fully charged with sunlight of course).

Flux intelligent has always turned out cheaper to use, or gave more profit than the standard Flux. However, charging the car often might change this result? I don't, as I use my bike more than the car in summer which is charged by sunlight.

The interesting part: Agile.

Using Agile on Saturday I spent £1.098 running house and charging the battery, and received £3.7307 in export at 15p a KW. £2.1461 profit. This is not bad at all!

If i was to charge the battery an extra 6Kw and export at 0.15p, I would just make about 30p profit on this particular day. If charged by sunlight, the extra export for 6KWat 15p is 90p

Conclusion
So both Flux tariffs earn more money than Agile during the summer. For this day, Flux 57p and Flux Int £1.6395 extra over agile.

If you are already on Flux you can get a comparison via the Agile portal at https://agile.octopushome.net/dashboard
There is an option to compare your consumption. It works for Flux (i used it before I switched) and will probably work for other Octopus tariffs. But you have to be on the Octopus tariff you want to compare to Agile.

Not much good if you are already on Agile but info might be useful to those thinking of switching.

Thanks johalareewi, But i have already done the maths in the excel table now.

If anyone would like to see the costs vers Agile, every day this week, just let me know here and I'll publish them.

Ok the new April prices for flux are:

Flux 2024
Day in - 23.77p - exp -14.49p
Flux in - 14.26p - exp - 4.93p
Peak in - 33.28p - exp - 23.95p
Day rate 53.94p

and flux intelligent:
Off peak 21.39p
Peak 28.53p
Day rate 53.94p

Suddenly you aren't making as much money over Agile unless it's very sunny. This week is mostly rain, so I'm going to hang back from changing to flux until next week. But I'll still keep an eye on costs.

Verdict so far, Flux is nowhere as profitable as last year and I can't imagine it covering the cost of winter perhaps :( But we'll see how it goes.

Costs
SUN - FLUX: £0.40 - F INT: £1.17 - Agile: £1.0115
MON FLUX: £1.6887 - F INT: £2.682 - Agile: £1.6289
